Between 2017 and 2021, about 83% of Americans on average considered their health in general to be good, very good or excellent, according to a U.S. News analysis of survey-based data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Yet that rate varied among different racial and ethnic groups. American Indians and Alaska Natives (72.9%) and Hispanics (75.9%) posted rates of good or better health that were lower than the national mark, for example, while rates among Asian Americans (90.8%) and whites (84.6%) were higher.

Breaking down the data further shows how gaps between racial and ethnic groups persist and vary at the state level. As part of the Racial Equality in America project, U.S. News compared the general health quality of different racial and ethnic groups in a state to the rate of the state’s overall population, measuring the average disparity between the two categories. States were ranked based on the size of their disparity, with higher values resulting in a worse ranking for racial equality in general health. Disparities in rates of those who considered themselves to be in good or better health based on the survey data are reflected as an average absolute percentage-point difference.

In Illinois, for instance, the overall share of the population in good or better health was 83.5% – not far from the national average. But a large gap between Hispanic people (72.9%) and Asian people (92.7%) indicates a high level of disparity in the state. In Virginia, the overall share of people in good or better health was also similar to the national average, at 84.2%. But smaller gaps existed between groups and the overall share on average, amounting to a lower level of disparity and more equality.
