Here are the top stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. Senior Gleaners are helping fill the fresh food gap for nonprofits that feed people including Brother Bennos in Oceanside. The gleaners are a volunteer group with teams of pickers that collect unpicked fruit and unsold products from grocery stores for delivery to its network of charities. Recent changes in organic waste collection regulations have increased the number of requests Senior Gleaners of San Diego County are getting and they need more volunteers to help. Senior Gleaners is also seeking donations for a van to transport food from the field to the 64 locations they serve. (Times of San Diego)
  2. The Seabird Resort in Oceanside made the list of “Best Hotels & Resorts in Southern California” and was one of only three on the list for “Best Beach Resorts.” The resort was mentioned both for the amenities and its location on the beach and across from the Oceanside Pier, which the article noted is the largest wooden pier on the West Coast. Locals have long known how special our area is and now the word is getting out as more and more visitors are enjoying all that Oceanside has to offer. (Only In Your State)
  3. The FBI is offering a $10,000 reward for a man known to have ties to Oceanside. Gerardo Mendoza has been on the run since he was indicted in the 2005 shooting death of Joseph Gravett in Fort Mohave, Arizona. According to the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office, Gravett reportedly identified Mendoza as the shooter before he died at a hospital. “Mendoza is described as a 40-year-old Hispanic male, 5-foot-6, 130 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He also goes by the name “Blackie.” The FBI says he should be considered armed and dangerous.” (KLAS – 8 News Now)
