Red Crossers Staffing Major Disasters Thousands of Miles Apart
[ad_1]
The American Red Cross remains on the ground across the Southeast helping people affected by Hurricane Idalia while continuing its large relief response more than 4,500 miles away in Hawaii after the tragic wildfires there.
Thousands of people have been displaced and the Red Cross is providing shelter, food, health and mental health services and relief supplies. In addition, the organization is helping those affected plan their next steps as they begin to recover.
While responding to these two large disasters, the Red Cross is also closely monitoring the path of Hurricane Lee and getting ready to deploy disaster workers and relief supplies if necessary.
If Lee makes landfall in the U.S., it could potentially be yet another $1 billion disaster this year. According to a report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), as of September 11, a new record has been set with 23 confirmed weather and climate disaster events occurring in the country with damages exceeding $1 billion each.
With months to go, there is the potential for additional devastating disasters. In comparison, the U.S. experienced 18 disaster events exceeding $1 billion in disaster-related losses in 2022.
CLIMATE CRISIS The climate crisis is disrupting lives and entire communities as the frequency and intensity of extreme weather rapidly increases across the globe. Today, the American Red Cross is responding to nearly twice as many large disasters as we did a decade ago. These disasters include strengthening storms, record floods and widespread wildfires. As these extreme weather disasters increase, more people will need help from the Red Cross. Find out more about the Red Cross and its work on the climate crisis here.
HURRICANE IDALIA Thousands of people in the Southeast are facing a long road to recovery as they continue cleaning up the devastation left behind by Hurricane Idalia. Red Cross disaster workers are with them, providing comfort, support and relief.
Estimates show more than 1,700 homes were either destroyed or received major damage.
Red Cross volunteer teams are bringing relief services directly to people in remote areas, including meals, cleanup kits and other resources to help them start their recovery after the storm’s destruction.
Since Idalia made landfall, more than 750 trained Red Cross disaster workers have deployed to help people impacted by Idalia. The Red Cross has provided over 2,000 overnight stays in 32 shelters across Florida and Georgia. With the help of our partners, we have provided more than 209,700 meals and snacks, and served some 18,700 households with more than 28,700 relief items.
HAWAII WILDFIRES ─ Thousands of people in Hawaii are still dealing with the trauma and devastation left behind by last month’s tragic wildfires. Red Cross disaster workers are with them now and will be there in the weeks and months ahead, providing compassionate and equitable care.
The Red Cross is working with our partners to provide meals, disaster health and mental health services, and spiritual care to help families and individuals begin the recovery process. Since the fires began, more than 1,000 trained Red Cross disaster workers have deployed to Hawaii or helped virtually. Together, the Red Cross and the county government have provided more than 126,500 overnight emergency shelter and hotel stays on Maui and Oahu. With the help of partners, we have provided more than 530,000 meals and snacks to people in need.
The Red Cross is also supporting a Family Assistance Center at the Hyatt Regency in Kaʻanapali on Maui where people can get food and water, receive emotional and spiritual care, access health services and casework assistance, obtain updates from authorities, and receive support finding loved ones.
