New Orleans Mayor Says Flying First Class Is Safer For Black Women

[ad_1]

The city of New Orleans wants the mayor to reimburse the costs of the upgrades. According to its travel policy, “Employees are required to purchase the lowest airfare available…employees who choose an upgrade from coach, economy or business class flights are solely responsible for the difference in cost.”

In June, Mayor Cantrell visited Switzerland to promote a jazz event, spending $16,600 for flights and accommodations for her and two of her staff members. Of the total, $10,000 was spent on her airfare.

In July, she spent $17,854.57 on her airfare to France, where she promoted New Orleans at various events. Her staff flew in economy. For another trip to France to sign an agreement with resort town Antibes, the total cost was over $43,000.

However, Mayor Cantrell says she will not reimburse the city. She cites her safety as a Black woman and concerns over COVID-19 as reasons justifying her travel preferences.
