The College of Engineering Office of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion’s May JEDI Hour will feature Shaun Mayo, chief people officer for the Arizona Cardinals and its affiliated companies, on the topic “Supporting the Whole Person” for Mental Health Awareness Month.

Mayo will discuss how implementing micro-steps will assist in boosting your mental health. In addition, he will provide tips on how to support your whole self in and outside the workplace.

The session will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 4. Registration is not necessary, and all are welcome.

As we know, mental health is a global concern, said Patrice Storey, the college’s assistant director of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Therefore, providing the necessary resources to ensure a thriving campus community is essential.

According to Sarah Wilson, guest blogger for the American Society of Engineering Education, in her article “Prioritizing Mental Health and Wellness in Engineering,” she found that while the prevalence of mental health concerns among students is a concern across all majors, national data show that engineering students experiencing mental health distress are less likely to seek professional help compared to their peers (46% of engineers vs. 62% non-engineers).

Furthermore, this treatment gap persists across different engineering students sub-populations, such as cisgender men (42% of engineers vs. 52% of non-engineers), Black students (40% of engineers vs. 50% of non-engineers) and first-generation college students (42% of engineers vs. 56% of non-engineers).
