STEUBENVILLE — The Juneteenth celebration continues Monday with events taking place at the city’s North End Park and ballfield. According to officials, the day will consist of entertainment, events and the opportunity to view merchandise from craft vendors.
On this fourth day of the nationwide holiday, a lot of activities have been planned for the community. First Ward Councilwoman Asantewa Anyabwile has been helping to organize the Juneteenth celebrations. She explained the Ohio District of Federated Women’s Club will be providing free food for children 18 years of age and younger. That menu will include barbecued items such as hot dogs and hamburgers. Drinks will also be provided.
When asked if adults may bring their own food since food vendors will not be present, Anyabwile stated, “absolutely.” She replied parents or adults can eat alongside their children or bring a picnic lunch to eat at one of the tables inside the park area while enjoying the day’s festivities.
Children will have the opportunity to enjoy jumping in bouncy houses that will be inflated and gather together to listen to story time books being read by volunteers Rose Slaughter and April Johnson.
Trinity Health System’s mobile unit will be on site to provide mammograms for anyone wishing to get tested. Those interested need to bring along their insurance card, as health officials will need that information before testing can be done. The purpose of bringing in the mobile unit to the Juneteenth event is to ensure any woman wanting to be screened has the opportunity and means to do so. This makes testing more convenient and removes barriers to having the testing done. Dr. Sandra Palmer is overseeing this portion of the day’s events.
Craft vendors will be in attendance as well, Anyabwile stated.
Monday will feature a performance of “Glory” (the musical soundtrack of freedom) at 3 p.m. According to the Steubenville Branch of the NAACP, this community event will be a walk-through using the soundtrack of music!”
“We will attempt to tell the story of African American culture through word and song,” it was stated. “Will Walters of Monarch magazine will be our narrator for the afternoon and Steubenville’s own Soul Skill Show Band will provide live music for the singers.”
Educational information on Juneteenth will be distributed to those in attendance
Monday’s celebration will wind up the 2023 holiday which became law two years ago. Congress passed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act in June 2021–a day after the Senate passed the bill with unanimous consent. The bill was signed into law June 17. The federal government followed the lead of 47 states that already recognized Juneteenth.
Anyabwile expressed this day’s importance, saying while Americans celebrate their independence on the Fourth of July, the city of Steubenville wanted to donate to the Juneteenth independence day as well. In doing so, she said this would open up so much more for the community and provide them the opportunity to become involved in learning more about Juneteenth and why it is celebrated.
The four-day event has been divided into sections, with the first two days focusing on activities and events planned at the Second Baptist Church. The third day’s events on Sunday feature Mount Carmel Baptist Church, where Pastor William Curtis will give the afternoon sermon. The Juneteenth celebration is a four-day event which runs from Friday through Monday.
