Take charge of your health to continue Juneteenth celebrations

CINCINNATI (WKRC) – As part of local Juneteenth celebrations, public health leaders in the Tri-State are offering free programs to promote wellness in the African American community.

The Center for Closing the Health Gap is inviting people to keep the celebrations going by taking care of their own health.

From regular exercise for young people and families, to healthy cooking and eating, Renee Mahaffey Harris says to let the good vibes continue.

She recently appeared on “What’s Happening in Health” (6 a.m. Sundays on Local 12) to talk about which programs the center is offering during the summer.

It’s really a generational conversation, and that’s something that we’re seeing more of, and I think the data is telling us that, as well. We’re seeing higher incidents of hypertension and type 2 diabetes of kids under the age of 18, in addition to the statistics we already know,” said Mahaffey Harris, president and CEO of the Center for Closing the Health Gap. “So, we now need to address this from a lifestyle perspective, and understanding how you feel affects everything else.

Some of activities include a walking group in Mt. Auburn. Anyone can participate. Walkers use an app to track their steps and see who’s in the lead. It runs through Aug. 26.

Another program is the Live Right! Coping with Trauma Series, happening Aug. 2, 9, 16, and 23. The series will focus on stress and trauma in daily life. It will be led by Dr. Anisa Shomo, president of the Cincinnati Medical Association.

Anyone who is interested in taking part or has questions can call (513) 585-9879 or visit the Center for Closing the Health Gap website.
