Aiken sorority members go red for heart health awareness | News

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Kappa Upsilon Omega Chapter of Aiken and Mu Lambda Undergraduate Chapter of USC Aiken held their annual Pink Goes Red event on Feb. 4. This year’s event was held virtually. Pink Goes Red is a Target II Women’s Health and Wellness program in which AKA continues to raise community awareness for the critical health issues impacting African American women, like heart health.
There were 36 participants in this Zoom event, seven of which were guest including Dr. Kimberly Thompson, assistant professor of Family Medicine at Augusta University. She expressed the importance of women being an advocate for their health and monitoring warning signs. She also emphasized the rising number of pregnant fatalities due to heart issues.
Another guest after the health and wellness presentation was Monica L. Williams. Williams has been a licensed Zumba instructor for nine years and was recently certified to teach Xtreme Hip Hop Step Aerobics. She led Zoom attendees in a hip hop aerobic lesson. Williams also serves on the board of Crowning Lupus.
