AKA Sorors stride toward heart health

[ad_1]

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — You may have heard of the worldwide movement, “Girl Trek,” which was originally an initiative for Black women to band together and focus on their health by being more active.

One sorority right here in in the Coastal Bend is using the trek walk to help their members step into a healthier lifestyle while building their sisterhood.

Co-chair Jaishree Ellis told 3News that heart disease is the number one killer of women, and number one killer of Black women in the United States.

They are hoping these walks continue to inspire others to prioritize their health.

Lucretia Nickelson is the Alpha Kappa Alpha, community uplift co-chair. She says the sorority helps people take those first steps in the fitness journeys.

“People who haven’t walked are coming out and joining us on these walks… so its baby steps but we hope it turns into a lifestyle for them as well.”

Alpha Kappa Alpha does their trek walk every other Sunday and they choose new locations around the Coastal Bend in hopes to get out into the community and inspire.
