Be Rooted Stationary Was Founded To Celebrate Black Women

If you can’t trust a journalist to know the best journals, pens, and notebooks money can buy, who can you trust? Ok, so I know that most of the *official* writing I’m doing doesn’t exactly involve me putting pen to paper, but I’ve been writing in a diary every. single day. since I was 11 years-old (my parents said I needed a creative outlet because I talked too much). Now, it’s like my therapy. There’s something seriously powerful and cathartic about getting all my thoughts out on paper, and I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling that way.
Truth be told, I didn’t give much thought to the types of journals I was writing in until I came across Be Rooted’s art-forward journals ($13, Target) and luxe, glittery pens ($17, Target). The chic stationery brand founded by Jasmin Foster isn’t just filled with beautifully-designed products—it was made to fill a seriously large hole in the pen and paper industry. “As a longtime lover of stationery, I never felt I fully belonged because there was never anyone who looked like me,” she said. “I want to create a brand that uplifts and celebrates women of color.”
Here’s why this is my favorite stationery brand:
The brand is one I love to support.
One of the brand’s biggest goals is to empower women of color. “I want to change the face of the stationery industry,” says Foster. Beyond that, they do a lot to give back to women of color. They’ve partnered with the Loveland Foundation to donate over 400 minutes of free therapy to Black women.
It doesn’t stop there—Foster says another one of her ultimate goals is to build a full community out of Be Rooted. “We really just launched with journals because we had to start somewhere,” she says. “However, the long-term strategy is to be a full lifestyle and gifting brand.”
It’s the prettiest stationery I’ve ever used.
As a total notebook junkie, I didn’t think there was much that could make a journal truly unique, but I was completely wrong. The brand partners with actual artists like illustrator Melissa Koby, who makes art centered around the theme of social justice. That’s why the notebooks also feature beautifully-written messages, featuring phrases like “Guard your spirit”, “Protect your spirit”, and “Lead with passion” to name a few of my personal favorites.
The brand makes amazing gifts.
The glittery pens seem like the kind of luxe item you’d get from a designer brand. They make an amazing gift item to the writer or bougie friend in your life, because they look way more expensive than they actually are.
And, because the journals contain such beautiful images and words, they make a really meaningful and thoughtful present. In fact, they even have a gift-ready bundle ($46, Be Rooted) that features a planner, journal, and two of their gorgeous pens—for under $50, it makes a truly unique and thoughtful present they’ll actually use. Just be sure to gift yourself a little something, too. Chances are, this’ll become your new go-to stationery brand (I know it’s mine!).
