This month, Sorority and Fraternity national convention events return, along with civil rights and health care groups. African Americans are returning to their national meetings by the thousands in-person, most with virtual options, as many historic black groups are welcoming their memberships back to traditional hotel-based gatherings again this summer.
The 114th NAACP National Convention, themed “Thriving Together,” in Boston’s Convention and Exhibition Center July 26-August 1, convenes along with their ACT-SO program July 28-31.
The National Urban League Conference is July 26-29 in Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center for leaders in business, government, and social advocacy to explore issues and initiatives that profoundly affect their communities.
The National Dental Association holds their 110th annual convention, “Bridging the Generational Gap: Back to the Future of Advancng Oral Health Equity, Student Mentorship, and Raising Our Profile,” along with the 51st Student National Dental Association convention in the New Orleans Hyatt Regency July 20-23.
The National Medical Association’s 121st Annual Convention & Scientific Assembly, “Accelerating the March Toward Health Equity” in the New Orleans Hyatt Regency July 29-August 2 will be the nation’s foremost forum on medical science and African American health.
Alpha Kappa Alpha host their Leadership Seminar in Chicago July 12-16 with workshops, forums, certifications and specialized trainings, ahead of their 71st Boule in Dallas in 2024.
Alpha Phi Alpha hosts their 97th General Convention with the theme “Strengthening the Brotherhood and Standing for Social Justice” in the Hilton Anatole in Dallas July 26-30.
Delta Sigma Theta holds their “Inclusive, Innovative & Iconic” 56th convention in downtown Indianapolis’ Indiana Convention Center July 18-24
My Brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi will be in Tampa, Florida for a “Konklave on the Bay.” My home chapter, the Alpha Theta of Tennessee State University, will host a special Reception on Thursday, July 20, honoring our chapter Brother Amos Otis, initiated in 1961, who will receive the Fraternity’s highest honor, the Laurel Wreath. The 86th Grand Chapter meeting runs July 18-23 in the Tampa Convention Center.
Zeta Phi Beta and Sigma Gamma Rho hosted Boules last summer. The Zetas are “Celebrating the Year of the international Woman: Serving and Advocating for Health Justice Home and Abroad” this year. The ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho observed a special Centennial Celebration in Indianapolis last July, and celebrate “Greater Women, Greater World” in Houston next July 31-August 4, 2024.
Iota Phi Theta hosts its 60th Anniversary and 39th Biennial Conklave in Atlanta, “Guiding the Journey, Improving the Theta Man,” at the Crowne Plaza Ravinia July 25-30.
Phi Beta Sigma says “Believe in Our Power, Leading the Movement” in Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center and Marriott Marquis July 11-16.
Omega Psi Phi met in Charlotte last year and host their 84th Grand Conklave in Tampa next June 26 through July 2, 2024. Their Dr. Moses C. Norman, Sr. International Leadership Conference is in Nassau, Bahamas July 11-16.
The Association of Black Psychologists meet in Detroit July 19-22, with a pre-convention gathering sponsored by the host Metro Detroit ABPsi chapter Tuesday, July 18. The 54th Annual Convention, “Homecoming: (Re)Claiming our Divine African Knowing, Being, Doing and Belonging” is five days of “Blacxellence, Blacnificence & Blacktastic programming, special talks, and community service,” featuring speakers such as Linda James Myers, Edwin Nichols and Wade Nobles, to name only a few whose work I personally have utilized.
