Fairfield nursing program forms clinical partnerships

Fairfield University’s Marion Peckham Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies is partnering with Baylor Scott and White Health, Ascension Seton, and Central Texas Veterans Health Care Systems to help students attain clinical experiences through the Egan School’s new Austin-based program.

The Egan School’s expansion to Texas establishes an additional nursing pathway through Fairfield University, and addresses the needs of the national healthcare system. The Austin campus was recently approved by the Texas Board of Nursing. The first cohort of students will be admitted in May 2023, with a second cohort to begin in January 2024.

Fairfield Egan’s full-time, 15-month accelerated second-degree baccalaureate nursing program will be offered at the Austin campus, and will let students with a non-nursing bachelor’s degree pursue a bachelor of science in nursing degree in an accelerated format. Employment opportunities for nurses in the next decade are projected to grow 15 percent.

The new location will feature classrooms and several simulation labs, including a simulated intensive care unit and a surgical suite. The nursing curriculum at the Austin, Texas-based facility will mirror baccalaureate offerings at Fairfield Egan’s main campus in Fairfield.

At the completion of this program, students will be eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Exam to become registered nurses.

SHU fraternity hosts white ribbon campaign

Sacred Heart University fraternity Delta Tau Delta endeavored to help end domestic violence against women with its annual White Ribbon Campaign, organized in collaboration with the Center for Family Justice in Bridgeport.

The event, which took place in the Edgerton Center for the Performing Arts at the end of March, included speeches, a raffle and other attractions to raise awareness about domestic violence. The White Ribbon Campaign has become part of Delta Tau Delta’s local philanthropy.

The Center for Family Justice aims to break the cycle of abuse and violence by providing services that create hope, restore lives and drive social change through education and community collaboration. The White Ribbon Campaign helps publicize the mission.

Groups of men and boys in 60 countries participate in the movement, which began as a response to a horrendous mass shooting at the École Polytechnique, a college in Montreal, on Dec. 6, 1989.

The White Ribbon Campaign kicks off the annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, the international men’s march to stop rape, sexual assault and gender violence. This year’s walk, scheduled for April 29, will start at the Fairfield Train Station at 9 a.m.

Gary MacNamara, Sacred Heart’s executive director of public safety and government affairs, as well as Fairfield’s former police chief, will lead the procession, which he has done for 10 previous years.
