Juneteenth Multicultural Celebration on Saturday
OCEANSIDE —
The annual Juneteenth Multicultural Celebration, hosted by the North San Diego County National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, is set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Civic Center Plaza in downtown Oceanside.
Highlights of the festival include Jazz music, Black Storytellers of San Diego, a vendor marketplace, food and community informational and health awareness booths, including an informational booth hosted by the North County African American Women’s Association.
The Youth Zone will include games, face painting, crafts and activities. Entertainment throughout the day will feature professional and local performers.
Admission is free. Pier View Way from North Coast Highway to Ditmar Street will be closed throughout the event. For more information, visit ci.oceanside.ca.us.
Black Storytellers of San Diego share stories Sunday at library
The Oceanside Public Library hosts a free Storytelling Concert led by Black Storytellers of San Diego at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Mission Branch Library, 3861 Mission Ave.
Stories will be told celebrating Juneteenth, which refers to June 19, 1865, when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger declared freedom for slaves in Texas. The federal holiday commemorates the emancipation of slaves.
Oceanside residents and members of Black Storytellers of San Diego, Dr. Almena Lowe Mozon, Griot Ollis J. Mozon Jr. and Linda Brown, will share stories and histories about Juneteenth. Black Storytellers of San Diego fosters storytelling that is educational, entertaining and inspiring. The group seeks to keep alive African and African American culture and traditions through the telling and teaching of stories.
