The pilot program LEGACY is a collaboration between the Mary C. Jenkins Community and Cultural Center, the NAACP and the TC Library Rowell Bosse North Carolina Room. The program includes a feasibility study where engaged and committed audience can give real feedback and spur new ideas, discover some variables and refine subjects for future presentations. LEGACY is an educational course where participants receive a clear description and analysis of Black history in America. It delivers an understanding and knowledge of local Black Americans, their history, their culture, their communities and their accomplishments, and it will provide opportunities for self-reflection.
An enthusiastic and diverse group of local residents, representing all three organizations, has been working for months to produce an educational program that will give a class of 30 interested individuals the opportunity to learn about the local Black experience, with a lot of history mixed in, mainly from citizens who, individually, or whose relatives lived through it.
This six-month course will begin with an orientation on Aug. 24 and end at a closing session on Jan. 18, 2024. In between there will be eight evening sessions, each on a different topic and cover the following: The Idea of America/Significance of Slavery; Business/Industry; Healthcare; Culture: Arts, Music, Design & Cuisine; Law and Justice; Education; the Role of Churches and the Lives of Black Women. LEGACY will strive to gather a diverse class, so will consider ethnicity, age, occupation, education and residence in the selection process. It is hoped this will bring together different perspectives and experiences. Applications will be available at the Mary C. Jenkins Community & Cultural Center at the end of April. The cost of participating in LEGACY is $100 but there is a sponsorship fund that is available for any who request it. We welcome donations to this fund as we want to encourage a diverse response. Thanks to a grant from the United Universalist Church we have a beginning. One of the goals of LEGACY is to encourage its participants to become ambassadors in the community that help us to continue to offer this educational opportunity and to also help “spread the word” about local African American history. The MCJCCC has begun this process and encourages all residents to visit the displays and exhibits in the cultural center.
