Dr. Hyosun Kim, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at Indiana State University, has been awarded a $115,565 grant from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Office of Minority Health and Health Equity (OMHHE) Innovation Award: Minority Health and Health Equity (U01). Through the grant, Dr. Kim will examine misinformation and advance communication strategies to support efforts to increase diversity in clinical trials. The research is expected to advance understanding of how to tackle deep-rooted mistrust about medical research that stems from historical trauma and restore trust among Black/African American communities.
To examine ways to best tackle the myths of clinical trials by effectively debunking and countering misinformation, Dr. Kim will test different debunking strategies and advance communication by employing innovative strategies to increase clinical trial enrollment for diverse populations. According to Dr. Kim, if an individual misconstrues the purpose of medical research and has misconceptions about clinical trials, they will be less willing to participate in clinical trials. Therefore, a prerequisite for successful health communication strategies to promote clinical trials is to understand the individual’s attitudes and beliefs toward clinical trials.
The study, expected to be completed by late 2023, has the goal of increasing understanding of the impact of misinformation and advance strategies to mitigate misinformation.
