Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Academic All-League Teams Announced (5.3.23)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Loyola Maryland graduate student defender Katie Detwiler was named the 2023 Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year when the League office announced honors on Wednesday. She was also among 12 student-athletes named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team.
 
Detwiler (emerging media, 3.95 GPA) is the ninth Patriot League women’s lacrosse student-athlete to earn Academic All-Patriot League Accolades three times after becoming the second player in League history to be named League defensive player of the year in three straight seasons.

Four more women’s lacrosse student-athletes have garnered Academic All-Patriot League recognition in multiple years. Boston University senior attack Jennifer Barry (behavior & health, 3.65 GPA), Bucknell senior defender Ella Payer (markets, innovation & design, 3.84 GPA), Colgate senior midfielder Cara O’Reilly (economics & theater, 3.77 GPA) and Lafayette junior midfielder Katie Chiasson (biology, 3.99 GPA) all received academic honors last season.

 

The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year winner for each sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out during the summer. One male and one female are selected for the honors.

 

2023 Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Katie Detwiler, Loyola Maryland, Gr., Defender, Devon, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll

*Detwiler is a four-time All-Patriot League selection, three-time Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year and Tewaaraton Award Top-25 semifinalist.

*She is pursuing her master’s degree in emerging media with a 3.95 cumulative GPA after earning her bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing last May while finishing with a 3.67 GPA.  

*The three-time All-America selection started all 17 games this season, finishing with two goals, nine ground balls, 15 caused turnovers and 68 draw controls for a Greyhounds’ defense that finished second in NCAA DI in scoring defense (6.76).

*Detwiler is the ninth women’s lacrosse student-athlete in Patriot League history to earn Academic All-League accolades three times.

 

Six All-League Honorees Make Academic Squad

Six of the 12 Academic All-Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse Team made one of the two All-Patriot League teams. The Greyhounds’ Detwiler led the way as a first-team selection and defensive player of the year. Teammate Sydni Black (info systems & data analytics, leadership & organization effect, 3.77 GPA), Boston University senior attack Jennifer Barry (behavior & health, 3.65 GPA) and Bucknell senior defender Ella Payer (markets innovation & design, 3.84 GPA) both received first-team honors. Holy Cross junior attack Lauren Drillock (psychology & neuroscience, 3.86 GPA) and Loyola Maryland senior defender Logan Olmstead (biology, psychology, 3.88 GPA)

 

Seven Student-Athletes Claim Academic Honors for the First Time

The 2023 Academic All-Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse Team recognized seven first-time honorees. Black, Drillock and Olmstead claimed spots on the academic All-League squad after also making their first All-League teams on Tuesday. American sophomore attack/midfielder Maddy Spratt (business administration: entrepreneurship, 3.83 GPA) earned accolades in her first year of eligibility. Army West Point senior defender Malina Hatton (life science, 4.15 GPA), Bucknell junior midfielder Emily Baird (biomedical engineering, 3.84 GPA) and Navy senior attack Charlotte Ryan (mechanical engineering, 3.80 GPA) also earned academic honors for the first time.

 

To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor. These honors recognize student-athletes who excel in their sport and the classroom. The awards are voted on by Patriot League women’s lacrosse sports information directors, who are not eligible to vote for their student-athletes.
