Racism is built into American medicine. A New England Journal of Medicine article in 2020 identified common medical guidelines that “correct” their formulas for race. Clinicians gather test results and medical histories, then use these guidelines or formulas to determine how to treat patients. The adjustments for race can have dire consequences, as they tilt decisions “in ways that may direct more attention or resources to white patients than to members of racial and ethnic minorities,” the paper’s authors wrote.
