These remarks, which labeled Black women as being ‘dramatic’ and ‘crying wolf’ during pregnancy, have recently drawn criticism, particularly due to the pressing issue of high maternal mortality rates among Black women in the United States.

Controversial Comments Rekindle Public Outrage

The controversy surrounding Walters’ comments was reignited following her appearance in a virtual conversation with Vice President Kamala Harris. The discussion centered around the disproportionately high maternal mortality rates among Black women in America, which stand at three times higher compared to other ethnic groups. The stark contrast between Walters’ previous remarks and the grim reality for many Black women led to a public outcry.

Dr. Walters Expresses Regret and Outlines Steps Forward

In a heartfelt apology, Walters conveyed deep remorse for her comments, acknowledging the pain and offense they caused to Black women, including her patients. She admitted to having used inappropriate language to express her concerns about maternal mortality, emphasizing the necessity for enhanced communication and advocacy for women of color during their pregnancy.

Walters further suggested that pregnant women should maintain a log of their symptoms and seek multiple medical opinions whenever necessary. She also advocated for a buddy system, where a trusted individual could accompany patients to their medical appointments, ensuring their concerns are heard and addressed.
