Ujima Inc. will honor its scholarship recipients at April 22 event in Claremont – Press Enterprise

Ujima Inc. will celebrate 10 years of awarding scholarships to African American medical students in the Inland Empire at its scholarship award event to be held 11:30 a.m. April 22 at the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in Claremont.

The event will honor the Ujima scholarship recipients, known as Ujima Scholars, and there will be entertainment, door prizes and recognition of major donors, according to a news release.

Keynote speaker will be Bishop Terence P. Rhone of Mount Sinai Church of God in Christ Church of Pomona. Other special guests will include Pastor La Quetta Bush-Simmons of Immanuel Praise Fellowship in Rancho Cucamonga and representatives of Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, UCR School of Medicine and California University of Science and Medicine in Colton.

Ujima Inc. is a nonprofit organization whose mission is health equity for African Americans. One part of Ujima’s two pronged approach is providing scholarships to African American medical students who are committed to work toward health equity with their African American patients.

The second prong is the provision of health education, outreach and advocacy, achieved through the new “Ask the Doctor” Zoom series and the “Call for Articles” in the quarterly Ujima Newsletter.

Ujima supports students at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, pharmacy students at Keck Graduate Institute in Claremont, students at the UCR School of Medicine and students at the newest medical school in the Inland Empire, California University of Science and Medicine in Colton.

Tickets for the event are $50, available by mailing a check payable to Ujima Inc. by April 13 to Ujima Inc., P.O. Box 201, Upland, CA 91785.
