The City of Detroit ranks among one of the worst places to date in the country, especially for Black women.
Dr. Jessica Moorman is a fourth-generation Detroiter, an author and an associate professor at Wayne State University who researches how media shapes health and development over the life course. In her primary area of research, Dr. Moorman examines the media’s role in shaping Black women’s single socialization — the process by which attitudes and beliefs about single status are acquired.

Dr. Moorman is currently writing a book about Black women’s experiences of unmarried life in Detroit. Over the next few months, she’ll be joining CultureShift regularly to facilitate conversations that might inform her forthcoming book.
