Dr. Joycelyn Elders appears at Dillard tonight for screening of documentary on her life

This week is jam-packed for Dillard University, with plans Tuesday (Nov. 15) to host Dr. Joycelyn Elders for a fireside chat to kick off the college’s Minority Health & Health Equity Research Program’s lecture series.
On Thursday, the annual Ortique Lecture on Law and Society will feature attorney Kim Boyle.
Elders, the country’s first Black surgeon general and second woman to lead the U.S. Public Health Service, will be attending her documentary screening at the university on Tuesday (Nov. 15) at 6:30 p.m. in the Georges Auditorium.
The event will start with a viewing of the documentary “From the Cotton Fields to the White House: The Dr. Joycelyn Elders Story,” followed by a Q&A between Dr. Sonnee Weedn and Elders.
The lecture series’ goal is to give the Dillard community the chance to hear from public health experts who have made significant contributions to American history.
People interested in careers in medicine and public health will appreciate Elders and her aim to attain justice and health care for all, according to Dr. Michelle Smith, director of the Minority Health & Health Equity Research Center and one of Elders’ mentees.
Keeda Haynes, a justice reform advocate and attorney who spent almost four years in prison after college for a marijuana-related crime she says she did not commit, authored a book on her path from prison to politics and will visit campus prior to Elder’s screening.

The university will also present its annual Justice Revius O. Ortique Jr. Lecture on Law and Society on Thursday (Nov. 17) with attorney Kim Boyle as the lecturer. The Ortique lecture, named for Dillard alumni and Louisiana’s first African American Supreme Court justice, promotes Dillard’s longstanding commitment to social justice dating back to Straight University and New Orleans University.
All events are free and accessible to the general public.
