Zabel announces grant to improve safety, security at local church

Continuing his work to provide the funds needed for local projects to improve safety in his community, state Rep. Mike Zabel, D-163 of Upper Darby, announced St. Paul’s Syriac Orthodox Church has been approved for a $10,560 grant through the Nonprofit Security Grant Program.

“Gun violence, mass shootings and terroristic acts have become an all-too-familiar part of life,” Zabel said. “Thankfully, this grant program was passed in the wake of the tragic mass shooting that occurred at a synagogue in Squirrel Hill in 2018 that resulted in the murder of 11 people. I’m thankful to see funds will be used by a local place of worship in order to improve safety and protect residents.”

The Nonprofit Security Grant Program provides funds to eligible nonprofits to strengthen the security of a building to protect it against attack. Eligible organizations include those with substantiated prior threats or attacks because of ideology, beliefs or mission; organizations with buildings of symbolic historic or regional value; and/or findings from previous threats or vulnerability assessments.

Newtown Square announces details of 2022 Farmers Market

Vendors can sign up now to display and sell their wares at the annual Newtown Square Farmers Market. Organized and run entirely by volunteers, the market is open every Friday from 3- 6 p.m. in the parking lot of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 3625 Chapel Road, Newtown Square. The Farm Market season runs from June 3 to Sept. 30.

The youth librarian from the Newtown Square Public Library will come every week to do a half-hour reading program for kids, and about half of the markets will also feature live music.

According to Pam Purser, Newtown Square Farmers Market manager, “The Farmers Market is very festive—kind of feels like a block party out there every Friday! The church provides a beautiful setting, and we had great support from the community and Newtown Township last year. We are looking forward to Year Two being even bigger and better!”

The market should have 12-15 vendors each week, selling fresh produce, flowers, coffee, bread, pickles, microgreens, cookies, cakes, other baked goods, Italian cuisine, Greek cuisine, honey, nuts, candles, soaps, wines, alpaca wool products, and more. Some vendors are weekly, some are bi-weekly, and some are monthly. New vendors are still being added.

The nonprofit Newtown Square Farmers Market was started last year to revitalize the area around St. Albans Circle in Newtown Square, to build community, to help local businesses, and to promote sustainability.
To inquire about being a vendor there, contact Pam Purser at pam@gatherinthecircle.com or follow Newtown Square Farmers Market on Facebook or Instagram.
